Hi from Sweden, Ryan! I am so excited to be here, I am a first-time dog carer and trying to raise my puppy to the become a relaxed, balanced cool and confident dog, but wow, what an epic trip that is compared to raising children! Everything happens so incredibly fast with a pooch! She is just hitting teen age so I reckon the next few months will be interesting…
I listened to your podcast with Sarah Stremming on CogDog yesterday and everything you said really resounded with me. I am a bit of a geek when it comes to my dog, I try to watch her, read her body language and make sense of her behaviours, but I am obviously a complete beginner. so I am sure i miss clues often. I have only had my girl in my life for about 5 months now, but the learning so far has been incredible. We had a bit of a shaky start, but now I feel that we got this.
Being a gundog-husky -greyhound mix, She has both an agile mind and body with a strong will to collaborate if something is interesting, otherwise she will happily entertain herself with actvities of her own choosing (not necessarily human approved).. I try to keep on her tows mentally, and this seems to really work for her. Food is never in a bowl, but either hidden away somewhere in some sort of package in the house that she has to find and then to open. Alternatively, she has to sniff out her food in the woods, she has to work for the food or we play with it. This type of training seems to work wonders with her, her recall is surprisingly good (but not rock solid) even though we never ‘officially’ trained a recall, we mainly play and she seems to like to hang out with me – so far.
Anyway, I am off on a tangent, because I am still really excited and happy to finally have a dog in my life, she feels a forty year old dog shaped whole in my soul! Can’t wait to geek out on your page, thanks for sharing your knowledge! Best wishes Birgit
